I was out yesterday, living my life. I had some needles and things scheduled at the lab, and some social events out of town so that took priority over the blog. Today I want to tell you about our coffee table. My husband built me an absolutely stunning coffee table. I told him what I wanted, and he just built it for me. The problem was that he built it out on the front porch, with nothing for scale really. We were going to bring it in and start the staining process, but I suggested that perhaps we should put it in the spot it's going to be and just take a look at it - make sure it looked the way we thought it did. It's extremely heavy so Matt didn't love the idea but I insisted. He hauled it up and placed it and we shared... a moment.
It was silent, and a bit awkward, but we can read each others thoughts and knew exactly what was happening in that moment. This table was too. freaking. big. It looked like Noah's ark in the middle of our living room. I tried to take a picture to capture it's massiveness accurately and this one is pretty close. It was definitely more than a bit discouraging. Matt had worked pretty hard and was pretty proud before he saw the monstrosity there, next to our regular sized things. It dwarfed them tremendously and he knew it. He shook his head not knowing what to do next, but knowing that something had to be done. We couldn't be the people with the giant coffee table.
We decided the only thing that could be done was to take off an entire layer of the "cake" so it was only two boards high instead of three, which wasn't an easy job either. We crossed our fingers and hoped that it would do the trick, because there was no cutting it down in the area department. It was too late for that. Sure enough before I'd even woken up the next morning Matt had made his corrections and replaced it in the room. I took one look at it and it was love. It was perfect and just needed some stain and polyurethane to really make it shine. That's all done now and I'll share an after photo for you guys sometime but I'm tellin' ya, it's gorgeous. I'm so proud of Matt and the things he can create. It definitely comes in handy to have someone around to make your dreams a reality. Because he looooooves me.
Also - on an unrelated note - the baby really kicked for the first time on Wednesday night! I've felt a lot of movement since pretty early on, but these were solid Beckham style kicks. Matt could even feel them from the outside! Which is bizarre and seems very early but I'll take it! Any little reminder from the wee one that says "I'm still in here and doing great!" is more than welcome. We've also officially got an appointment for our ultrasound appointment to find out the sex and I'm, like, Christmas excited. It's a week from tomorrow and there are few other things I could care about more right now. It's all I can think about and occupies my thoughts constantly! Not that the baby's sex is going to make much of a difference - perhaps in the name department - but it'll still wear my boys' clothes probably, and play with the same toys. I'm not too keen on traditional gender roles and expectations, but it'll be fun to imagine what our completed family will look like and sound like and feel like. I'm dying of excitement, I can't wait!

What kind of wood is that? I have a loooong furniture building to do list for my husband once he finishes the current, "we're renovating and your wife is a little crazy" to do list that he's working on now. This looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteActually just pine! And then we sanded it, did one coat of conditioner (which makes a huge difference to how a stain affects a wood, in my experience, and is worth the extra effort!) and two coats of dark walnut stain. Then finished it off with three coats of high gloss polyurethane.
